Selecting the Proper Ball Weight

Adults:
The weight of the ball should be roughly ten percent of your body weight. Another good rule to go by is to choose a ball that is one to two pounds heavier than the house ball you are bowling with. The reason being is that the grip on the house ball is incorrect and a custom fit ball will feel much lighter because it will be easier to hold on to.

Kids: We recommend a weight equal to their age. Please note 6 & 8 lb bowling balls are designed for kids only not adults. Some manuacturers will not warranty 6 & 8 lb balls that are drilled for adults.

What is the Pin Placement of a bowling ball?

The pin placement of a bowling ball is the distance between the center of the core and the CG. How far the pin is from the CG will help to dictate the balls reaction on the lane.

The shorter pins like (0 - 2") will roll up earlier on the lane, and will have a smoother arcing motion to the pocket.

The longer pins like (4"+) will go much farther down the lane before starting to hook toward the pocket. The longer pins will also have a more dramatic motion toward the pins (possibly like a hockey stick shape or a skid/flip type of reaction).

The (2 - 4") pins are the most versatile to lay out for your ball driller allowing them to manipulate the ball path and have it roll up earlier or later depending on how they lay the ball out.

Why is this important?
You want to have the bowling balls natural intended reaction to match up with your drilling pattern you select for the bowling ball. If you get a short pin but want the ball to go long the ball will want to roll up early, even if you drill the ball to go long. This will cause you to have to loft the ball or push through it harder to try to get the desired ball reaction. If you would have selected the correct pin distance and applied a complementary drilling to the ball, you can throw the ball with much less effort, and let the ball do the work for you. This allows you to relax and be smooth, improving your release and scores.

What is the Top Weight of a bowling ball?

Top weight is the amount of weight difference from the top of the bowling ball (CG) and the bottom of the ball (opposite the cg).

In general their will always be more weight to the top of the ball (CG). This is due to the fact that when you drill finger holes into the ball you are extracting weight from the ball (generally 2 ounces or more depending the hole sizes and the density of the core) and it was initially designed to keep the ball balanced after it was drilled.

Balls with lower initial top weight were generally more stable after drilled than those with higher top weights due to the fact that their was so much weight left over after drilling. This created imbalance and often time added length and backend reaction for early three piece (Pancake weight block) bowling balls.

Top weight by today's standards is not nearly as important because a majority of the weight mass of most bowling balls is closer to the center of the ball than the shell and top weight has less of an effect because ball motion is more about the placement of the weight block itself and not the static weight mass. Top weight these days usually dictates hole size for those off label drillings.

What does this mean in selecting the correct top weight?

2.5 or less - Is for standard drilling techniques. It is also used for advanced drillings where moving the cg further off center of span creates a stronger drilling. You may not needing a weight hole with this type of drilling but depending on how far the cg is moved you may need a weight hole.

2.5 to 3.5 - Is great for normal layouts, a weight hole is not typical for this top weight. Stronger drillings may require a weight hole.

3.5 or more - This top weight is good if you want the ball to push more (go farther down the lane) while adding backend motion, but only if the ball driller knows and incorporates this into the drilling.

It can also be used for placing a big weight hole in a ball because it adds static weight to the drilling. This means you can use a stronger drilling than normal but make it legal by adding a weight hole to remove excess top weight (you can only have 1 oz of top weight remaining after drilling).

***NOTE: These are just basic descriptions to what top weight can do. There are many more scenarios for each top weight and what is capable with each different top weight range. Please discuss with your ball driller how they plan to drill you ball to get a better idea if they plan to use a weight hole or not to achieve the ball reaction you desire. There is no way to guarantee a ball will not need a weight hole depending on the top weight selected, the ball layout will determine that.

Shoe Size Charts

900 Global, Brunswick, Dexter and Storm bowling shoes run true to size.

Right Handed Shoes: Made for bowlers that bowl with their right hand because the slide pad is on the left shoe, which is the foot you slide with.

Left Handed Shoes: Made for bowlers that bowl with their left hand because the slide pad is on the right shoe, which is the foot you slide with.

Uni-sole Shoes: These shoes can be used for right or left handed bowlers because the slide pads are on both feet.

Don't know your shoe size? Do the following...

To get the best fit and comfort, we suggest measuring your feet each time you purchase a new pair of shoes because your feet will change during your lifetime.

1. Get a blank piece of paper, a pencil and a ruler or tape measure.
2. Put on the pair of socks you intend to wear with the shoes you are ordering. Through the course of the day, your feet will swell so it's best to measure them at the end of the day.
3. With the paper placed on a hard floor, sit down in a chair and place your foot flat on the paper. Lean forward, putting more weight onto the foot you are going to measure. As you probably know, your feet are different sizes so be sure to measure your larger foot.
4. Holding a pencil vertically, place a mark at the end of your heel. Place another mark at the tip of your longest toe.
5. With the ruler or tape measure, measure from the heel to the tip of your longest toe.

To Find Your Width:

Measure the distance between the two widest points on your foot. Reduce this number by 5 mm, or 1/5-inch. The result is the number you will use to determine your foot width.

To find your size, use the inch-to-size table. For example, if you are a man and your foot measures 10" long, you will wear a U.S. size 8 shoe. If you are between measurements, size up to the next larger size. It is easy to add a pair of socks to take up a little extra room but very difficult to make shoes that are too small comfortable.

Note: Just because you are a size 9 in one brand doesn't necessarily mean you are going to be a 9 in another. Footwear sizes and shapes vary from brand to brand. Please keep this in mind.

Description

Roto Grip Halo Vision Bowling Ball

The forever famous Centrum Core has now established itself as one of the best asymmetrical cores in Roto Grip history. With its cube type shape and radial disc shape through the middle, continuous motion best describes this core in action.

Our latest hybrid creation, better known as eTrax-H19 will only be used on HP4 & HP3 balls. This formulation was created with the help of the chemists at our material supplier in order to produce more surface roughness without losing responsiveness to friction.

Part solid, part pearl and surface texture out of the box means this ball will be cleaner through the front of the lane than the original HALO. Yet it will not be as long down the lane as the HALO Pearl, thus providing a super versatile ball that can be sanded more, or even shined up if so desired. Think Defiant Soul on steroids!

Halo Vision Review
Let me introduce you to the new big dog on campus in the Halo Vision. The Halo Vision is the newest Halo in the series, still keeping the same core as seen in all the halo’s prior but wrapped in a new Hybrid coverstock to compliment the solid and pearl versions in the line. You’ll see the Halo Vision get through the front part of the lane with ease and have a more back end than the solid version Halo. This ball is the house shot killer! The Halo Vision blends out the wet-dry very well. You can move as far left with it as you want (if you’re right handed) and throw it as far right as you want and it’ll always do the same thing; STRIKE! For heavier conditions, the Halo Vision will never miss the midlane or down lane and demolish the pins. This ball is a great addition to the Halo series and a great “big ball” in general. This ball gives me confidence on heavier conditions knowing I can create a spot and be able to score higher than my competition on the fresh. Nate Garcia

Halo Vision
Roto Grip’s newest HP4 line ball has the same color scheme as another blast from the past and it sure doesn’t disappoint either. This ball is as equally strong as the original Halo with the only the Vision being a little cleaner but not as clean or as angular as the Halo Pearl. Lower rev and Tweeners will love this ball because it gives you the same look as a big hooking solid but without burning up as quickly and higher rev players will love how clean it is.

Halo Vision Review
Ball Specs: Roto Grip Halo Vision Coverstock Hybrid Reactive Centrum™ Core (Asymmetrical) Color Gold & Sky Blue Pearl / Purple Solid Finish 4000-grit Layout 40 x 5-1/4 x 40 Bowler Specs: Right Hand. PAP 5” Over 1/2 up Rev Rate 300. Tilt 20. Rotation 50. Speed at release 17 Review: The Roto Grip Halo Vision has been a real treat to roll. It is right up there with the hook of the original Halo but shapes in a different way. By this I mean the smooth strong shape at the breakpoint all the way through the pins. I put this ball between my Crux Prime and Halo Pearl in total hook. The way the Halo Vision handles oil and drives hard and smooth off the breakpoint is impressive. This is one of the most aggressive but predictable balls I have ever used. The Halo Vision will give bowlers confidence on heavy oil. When you trust a ball to come back it loosens up the arm swing so you can make a good shot. I have tested this ball on a variety of conditions and if there is oil you will not be disappointed. One thing I noticed is how well this ball drives through the pins. The carry of the Vision is very good for an early rolling ball. I have used this ball with a lot of lane shine and it may even roll a bit nicer through the front. I have also put a light polish over the box finish and it makes for a super reaction when the box finish is a few feet too early. I did sand down a Halo Vision for one of my better bowlers and we saw an earlier read, 4-5 more boards overall in hook and no loss of carry. If you are looking for a heavy oil ball, or bowl on thick sport conditions the Halo Vison is a great choice. The Vision seemed to start as a slow seller but as more people hear and see this ball the demand is on the rise. Summary: The Halo Vision is strong but smooth The predictability and hit are very good on this ball. The colors are very eye catching on the Halo Vision. The Vision is a great choice for heavier oil patterns. Glenn Wendel PBA Member / Storm Pro Shop Staff

Halo Vision Ball Review
Weight: 14 lbs. Pin Length: 4-4.5” Drilling: 40 x 2 1/2 x 25 Pattern Length: 41 ft. Pattern Volume: Medium Pattern Type: Modified House Pattern Right Handed The HALO VISION has the eTrax-H-19 Hybrid Reactive cover stock, wrapped around the asymmetrical Centrum Core weight block. The box finish is 4000 grit, but can be polished or sanded for different desired reactions. The color is a mix of Gold & Sky Blue Pearl/Purple Solid. The 14 lb. version has a 2.54 RG, with a differential of 0.050, and PSA differential of 0.015. I drilled the Halo Vision for maximum back end reaction. I have used the HALO VISION on a THS of 39 ft. with moderate volume, and modified house patterns in area tournaments and our home house scratch league. I found it to be pretty strong on the back end, for a good fit between my Halo Solid and Halo Pearl. I use it as my benchmark ball to get a read on the lanes. I have kept the surface at the 4000 grit box finish. This gave me a great look on the medium volume house patterns, and the modified house patterns I’ve tried it on. I haven’t tried any surface changes as of yet, as it’s had a perfect place in my arsenal as is. It got down the lane for me, longer than the Halo Solid, and faced up a little stronger to the pocket. When the corner pins start to show up, I go to my Halo Pearl, or even the Idol Pearl for more down lane energy. Bye bye corners pins. This is a nice fit in my arsenal, in between the Halo Solid and Halo Pearl. It gives me a similar look to the old Defiant Soul, which is the look Roto Grip was going for in this piece. Mission accomplished. You won’t be disappointed in the reaction, and continuation through the pins that you’ll see with the Halo Vision. Thanks for listening. Halo Vision
This ball is a great compliment to the Halo and the Halo Pearl. Since its hybrid, it's cleaner than the Halo, but not as long as the Halo Pearl. It fits perfectly in the middle. I have always loved hybrids, so this ball is great for my style of bowling. I can throw this ball on medium-heavy PBA shots, and it also kills the THS you may be bowling on. My PAP: 5 over and 1/4 up I drilled mine pin above the bridge (Tester drilling) I really enjoy my Halo vision. If you liked either of your Halo or Halo Pearl then you'll love this. Or, if your're looking for a strong hybrid, this is your ball.
