Selecting the Proper Ball Weight

Adults:
The weight of the ball should be roughly ten percent of your body weight. Another good rule to go by is to choose a ball that is one to two pounds heavier than the house ball you are bowling with. The reason being is that the grip on the house ball is incorrect and a custom fit ball will feel much lighter because it will be easier to hold on to.

Kids: We recommend a weight equal to their age. Please note 6 & 8 lb bowling balls are designed for kids only not adults. Some manuacturers will not warranty 6 & 8 lb balls that are drilled for adults.

What is the Pin Placement of a bowling ball?

The pin placement of a bowling ball is the distance between the center of the core and the CG. How far the pin is from the CG will help to dictate the balls reaction on the lane.

The shorter pins like (0 - 2") will roll up earlier on the lane, and will have a smoother arcing motion to the pocket.

The longer pins like (4"+) will go much farther down the lane before starting to hook toward the pocket. The longer pins will also have a more dramatic motion toward the pins (possibly like a hockey stick shape or a skid/flip type of reaction).

The (2 - 4") pins are the most versatile to lay out for your ball driller allowing them to manipulate the ball path and have it roll up earlier or later depending on how they lay the ball out.

Why is this important?
You want to have the bowling balls natural intended reaction to match up with your drilling pattern you select for the bowling ball. If you get a short pin but want the ball to go long the ball will want to roll up early, even if you drill the ball to go long. This will cause you to have to loft the ball or push through it harder to try to get the desired ball reaction. If you would have selected the correct pin distance and applied a complementary drilling to the ball, you can throw the ball with much less effort, and let the ball do the work for you. This allows you to relax and be smooth, improving your release and scores.

What is the Top Weight of a bowling ball?

Top weight is the amount of weight difference from the top of the bowling ball (CG) and the bottom of the ball (opposite the cg).

In general their will always be more weight to the top of the ball (CG). This is due to the fact that when you drill finger holes into the ball you are extracting weight from the ball (generally 2 ounces or more depending the hole sizes and the density of the core) and it was initially designed to keep the ball balanced after it was drilled.

Balls with lower initial top weight were generally more stable after drilled than those with higher top weights due to the fact that their was so much weight left over after drilling. This created imbalance and often time added length and backend reaction for early three piece (Pancake weight block) bowling balls.

Top weight by today's standards is not nearly as important because a majority of the weight mass of most bowling balls is closer to the center of the ball than the shell and top weight has less of an effect because ball motion is more about the placement of the weight block itself and not the static weight mass. Top weight these days usually dictates hole size for those off label drillings.

What does this mean in selecting the correct top weight?

2.5 or less - Is for standard drilling techniques. It is also used for advanced drillings where moving the cg further off center of span creates a stronger drilling. You may not needing a weight hole with this type of drilling but depending on how far the cg is moved you may need a weight hole.

2.5 to 3.5 - Is great for normal layouts, a weight hole is not typical for this top weight. Stronger drillings may require a weight hole.

3.5 or more - This top weight is good if you want the ball to push more (go farther down the lane) while adding backend motion, but only if the ball driller knows and incorporates this into the drilling.

It can also be used for placing a big weight hole in a ball because it adds static weight to the drilling. This means you can use a stronger drilling than normal but make it legal by adding a weight hole to remove excess top weight (you can only have 1 oz of top weight remaining after drilling).

***NOTE: These are just basic descriptions to what top weight can do. There are many more scenarios for each top weight and what is capable with each different top weight range. Please discuss with your ball driller how they plan to drill you ball to get a better idea if they plan to use a weight hole or not to achieve the ball reaction you desire. There is no way to guarantee a ball will not need a weight hole depending on the top weight selected, the ball layout will determine that.

Shoe Size Charts

900 Global, Brunswick, Dexter and Storm bowling shoes run true to size.

Right Handed Shoes: Made for bowlers that bowl with their right hand because the slide pad is on the left shoe, which is the foot you slide with.

Left Handed Shoes: Made for bowlers that bowl with their left hand because the slide pad is on the right shoe, which is the foot you slide with.

Uni-sole Shoes: These shoes can be used for right or left handed bowlers because the slide pads are on both feet.

Don't know your shoe size? Do the following...

To get the best fit and comfort, we suggest measuring your feet each time you purchase a new pair of shoes because your feet will change during your lifetime.

1. Get a blank piece of paper, a pencil and a ruler or tape measure.
2. Put on the pair of socks you intend to wear with the shoes you are ordering. Through the course of the day, your feet will swell so it's best to measure them at the end of the day.
3. With the paper placed on a hard floor, sit down in a chair and place your foot flat on the paper. Lean forward, putting more weight onto the foot you are going to measure. As you probably know, your feet are different sizes so be sure to measure your larger foot.
4. Holding a pencil vertically, place a mark at the end of your heel. Place another mark at the tip of your longest toe.
5. With the ruler or tape measure, measure from the heel to the tip of your longest toe.

To Find Your Width:

Measure the distance between the two widest points on your foot. Reduce this number by 5 mm, or 1/5-inch. The result is the number you will use to determine your foot width.

To find your size, use the inch-to-size table. For example, if you are a man and your foot measures 10" long, you will wear a U.S. size 8 shoe. If you are between measurements, size up to the next larger size. It is easy to add a pair of socks to take up a little extra room but very difficult to make shoes that are too small comfortable.

Note: Just because you are a size 9 in one brand doesn't necessarily mean you are going to be a 9 in another. Footwear sizes and shapes vary from brand to brand. Please keep this in mind.

Description

Roto Grip Idol Pro Bowling Ball

Inside you will find the now famous Ikon Core. This is by far the best low RG / high diff symmetrical core we have ever offered in the HP3 line. It provide plenty of flare and continuation.

On the outside you will find our newest solid creation in the eTrax-S19 cover. This formulation was created over the last couple months to create more traction in oil without reading the lane too quickly. Then we finished it with a Sheen which means we factory polished it and then scuffed it with 3000 before we boxed it.

Bottom line, this ball is just different. We decided to make this a "Pro" version by way of the coverstock finish. The 3000-grit Sheen marks the first time we have ever offered this at Roto Grip. In our testing we found this formula of solid with a sheen finish creates push through the front of the lane with more control at the breakpoint. Compared to a shiny IDOL, the IDOL Pro has more shape down lane because it does not have the added nano particle in the cover.

Idol Pro Review by Tommy Gollick
The Idol Pro is the third version of the Idol series in the HP3 line of balls from Roto Grip. The Pro features a solid reactive coverstock called eTrax-S19. This cover does not have the additives that creates early traction like is found on the original Idol. This translates into a cleaner reaction through the front of the lane, with more downlane motion. The factory finish of 3000 grit-sheen, helps the Pro slow down faster than the Idol Pearl. The Pro has the same popular Ikon core as the previous Idols. The one color, solid Ocean blue is a “throwback” to a much simpler time of bowling ball colors. The Idol Pro fits right in between the original Idol, and the pearl version. I drilled two Idol Pros with different layouts. The first layout is a 4 ¼ x2 ¾, while the second is a 3x2 (pin distance/ pin buffer from VAL). Comparing the two Pro’s in the box finish of 3000 sheen, the 4” pin Idol is more stable through the front part of the lane, while the 3” Pro glides easier through the oil in the front of the lane and has a later, smoother change of direction. The 4” Pro covers more boards than does the 3”. The 3” Idol is better when moving further to the outside of the lane, and the backends are fresh and clean. The 4” Idol Pro is more useful on longer patterns with lazier backends. I’ve adjusted the surfaces of both balls to better compliment the reaction shapes that I have experienced. I used Storm Step #1 on the 3” Idol, and have used a 2000 pad on the 4” ball. This separates their reaction even more, and allows me to use them in their strengths of reaction. The change of surface makes the 4” ball compliment my 4x3 Idol, perfectly. When the Idol gets a little too early, or I start moving a little too deep, the Pro opens the lane up, and gives me the reaction I need to come around the corner, without being overly violent. The polished 3” Pro is great for keeping my angles in front of me and blends over reaction of shorter patterns with clean backends. The Idol Pro, for me, is a big brother to the IQ Tour solid. They share similarities of being easy to read and versatile. I like the Idol Pro. It’s a good ball that fits in the middle of my arsenal. I tend to like bowling balls that have predictability and versatility, and the Idol Pro gives me just that. Thank you for taking the time to read my Idol Pro ball review. Now, OWN It!!

Idol Pro!!!
The Idol Pro is a great complement to the Idol and Idol Pearl. I love my original Idol on heavier oil and longer patterns. I have found that the Idol Pro is a great transition from the Idol when the original Idol starts to burn up and you need to open up your angles. The Idol Pro gets down the lane cleaner and definitely has more angle down lane. If you are a fan of either the Original Idol, Idol Pearl or both then you definitely need to add the Idol Pro to your bag.

Idol Pro Review by Kyle & Joel Johnson
Ball Specs: 3000 eTrax-S19™ Solid Reactive Weight Block Ikon™ Core (Symmetrical) Settle the confusion early. This is not the same as the original Idol nor should it be considered a “step child”. RG took the original Idol core and tweaked the solid cover with a 3000 sheen to give this is completely different look and down lane motion. Basically what they created was a smarter and safer play down lane with the same monster amount of continuation through the pins as the original Idol. If you miss a little inside this ball will have more hold than the Idol. This ball has some characteristics of the original Hyroad with the versatility factor. Early or late in a set, the Idol Pro is predictable and seems like the “pro” move to make if you currently do not have it in your bag. #SquadRG Kyle & Joel Johnson Roto Grip Pro Shop Staffers

Another winner from Roto!
Roto Grip's new Idol Pro is a bit of a departure - two solids at the same time in the HP3 line? Not to worry though... even though this shares the same line name, it feels somewhat different than the Pearl and very different from the OG. It takes the familar Ikon (2.49 / 0.052) symmetrical core from the rest of the line and pairs it with a new cover (eTrax-S19) and a new-to-Roto surface prep (1500+polish+3000, aka "3000 sheen"). This gives a surprising amount of length for a sanded solid and a big boom downlane that feels both very controlled and very powerful - if you look up "turbocharged Hustle Ink" in the dictionary you'll find this ball in the list of definitions, and that's a very very good thing. The range of situations where this ball could be used were astounding. Anything from playing straighter on fresh house shot to lofting 6th arrow on burnt sport patterns and the Idol Pro got the job done with no muss, no fuss, and plenty of carnage at the pin deck. It also paired very ve

RG Idol Pro review by Brian Watson
The RG Idol Pro is the new ball in the Idol HP 3 line. I absolutely loved the original Idol and liked the Idol Pearl also. The Idol Pro uses the new eTrax-S19 solid coverstock that doesn’t have the nano found in the MicroTrax-S18 cover used on the IDOL. So it still a solid but with a different cover. The Idol pro is cleaner through the fronts than Idol as there is no nano in the new cover. But still being a solid it still is a strong arc motion downlane. I drilled mine pin down with a 5 inch pin and added Storm step 2 to the cover. Wow I am able to open up the lane a little when I need to move left. For even a solid I was still able to curve the lane when needed without losing carry. Very good addition to the IDOL line. The PBA guys absolutely love this ball and its great ball motion.
