Selecting the Proper Ball Weight

Adults:
The weight of the ball should be roughly ten percent of your body weight. Another good rule to go by is to choose a ball that is one to two pounds heavier than the house ball you are bowling with. The reason being is that the grip on the house ball is incorrect and a custom fit ball will feel much lighter because it will be easier to hold on to.

Kids: We recommend a weight equal to their age. Please note 6 & 8 lb bowling balls are designed for kids only not adults. Some manuacturers will not warranty 6 & 8 lb balls that are drilled for adults.

What is the Pin Placement of a bowling ball?

The pin placement of a bowling ball is the distance between the center of the core and the CG. How far the pin is from the CG will help to dictate the balls reaction on the lane.

The shorter pins like (0 - 2") will roll up earlier on the lane, and will have a smoother arcing motion to the pocket.

The longer pins like (4"+) will go much farther down the lane before starting to hook toward the pocket. The longer pins will also have a more dramatic motion toward the pins (possibly like a hockey stick shape or a skid/flip type of reaction).

The (2 - 4") pins are the most versatile to lay out for your ball driller allowing them to manipulate the ball path and have it roll up earlier or later depending on how they lay the ball out.

Why is this important?
You want to have the bowling balls natural intended reaction to match up with your drilling pattern you select for the bowling ball. If you get a short pin but want the ball to go long the ball will want to roll up early, even if you drill the ball to go long. This will cause you to have to loft the ball or push through it harder to try to get the desired ball reaction. If you would have selected the correct pin distance and applied a complementary drilling to the ball, you can throw the ball with much less effort, and let the ball do the work for you. This allows you to relax and be smooth, improving your release and scores.

What is the Top Weight of a bowling ball?

Top weight is the amount of weight difference from the top of the bowling ball (CG) and the bottom of the ball (opposite the cg).

In general their will always be more weight to the top of the ball (CG). This is due to the fact that when you drill finger holes into the ball you are extracting weight from the ball (generally 2 ounces or more depending the hole sizes and the density of the core) and it was initially designed to keep the ball balanced after it was drilled.

Balls with lower initial top weight were generally more stable after drilled than those with higher top weights due to the fact that their was so much weight left over after drilling. This created imbalance and often time added length and backend reaction for early three piece (Pancake weight block) bowling balls.

Top weight by today's standards is not nearly as important because a majority of the weight mass of most bowling balls is closer to the center of the ball than the shell and top weight has less of an effect because ball motion is more about the placement of the weight block itself and not the static weight mass. Top weight these days usually dictates hole size for those off label drillings.

What does this mean in selecting the correct top weight?

2.5 or less - Is for standard drilling techniques. It is also used for advanced drillings where moving the cg further off center of span creates a stronger drilling. You may not needing a weight hole with this type of drilling but depending on how far the cg is moved you may need a weight hole.

2.5 to 3.5 - Is great for normal layouts, a weight hole is not typical for this top weight. Stronger drillings may require a weight hole.

3.5 or more - This top weight is good if you want the ball to push more (go farther down the lane) while adding backend motion, but only if the ball driller knows and incorporates this into the drilling.

It can also be used for placing a big weight hole in a ball because it adds static weight to the drilling. This means you can use a stronger drilling than normal but make it legal by adding a weight hole to remove excess top weight (you can only have 1 oz of top weight remaining after drilling).

***NOTE: These are just basic descriptions to what top weight can do. There are many more scenarios for each top weight and what is capable with each different top weight range. Please discuss with your ball driller how they plan to drill you ball to get a better idea if they plan to use a weight hole or not to achieve the ball reaction you desire. There is no way to guarantee a ball will not need a weight hole depending on the top weight selected, the ball layout will determine that.

Shoe Size Charts

900 Global, Brunswick, Dexter and Storm bowling shoes run true to size.

Right Handed Shoes: Made for bowlers that bowl with their right hand because the slide pad is on the left shoe, which is the foot you slide with.

Left Handed Shoes: Made for bowlers that bowl with their left hand because the slide pad is on the right shoe, which is the foot you slide with.

Uni-sole Shoes: These shoes can be used for right or left handed bowlers because the slide pads are on both feet.

Don't know your shoe size? Do the following...

To get the best fit and comfort, we suggest measuring your feet each time you purchase a new pair of shoes because your feet will change during your lifetime.

1. Get a blank piece of paper, a pencil and a ruler or tape measure.
2. Put on the pair of socks you intend to wear with the shoes you are ordering. Through the course of the day, your feet will swell so it's best to measure them at the end of the day.
3. With the paper placed on a hard floor, sit down in a chair and place your foot flat on the paper. Lean forward, putting more weight onto the foot you are going to measure. As you probably know, your feet are different sizes so be sure to measure your larger foot.
4. Holding a pencil vertically, place a mark at the end of your heel. Place another mark at the tip of your longest toe.
5. With the ruler or tape measure, measure from the heel to the tip of your longest toe.

To Find Your Width:

Measure the distance between the two widest points on your foot. Reduce this number by 5 mm, or 1/5-inch. The result is the number you will use to determine your foot width.

To find your size, use the inch-to-size table. For example, if you are a man and your foot measures 10" long, you will wear a U.S. size 8 shoe. If you are between measurements, size up to the next larger size. It is easy to add a pair of socks to take up a little extra room but very difficult to make shoes that are too small comfortable.

Note: Just because you are a size 9 in one brand doesn't necessarily mean you are going to be a 9 in another. Footwear sizes and shapes vary from brand to brand. Please keep this in mind.

Description

Roto Grip MVP Bowling Ball

Inside, you will find the newly created Neutron NXT Core. The basis of this core was the original Neutron Core from yesteryear that was found in the Wrecker series of balls. We wanted a higher rg core that tumbles down the lane while still providing plenty of motion at the breakpoint.

The newly formulated VTC-H19 Hybrid cover is the next advancement from the VTC-H18 Hybrid cover used on the Hustle HSB. This new formula will provide even more responsiveness to friction down lane than previous hybrids used in the HP2 & HP1 lines.

Bottom line the logic behind this ball was to produce a great performing ball in the HP2 line. Between the new core and the new cover, we are happy to announce we achieved what we set out to do. This ball will be ideal as a transistion ball when the stronger balls become too early. And it will also be excel on those higher friction lane surfaces and conditions as well.

MVP review by Tommy Gollick
The MVP is a newly designed take on the older tried and true Wrecker in the HP2 line of balls from Roto Grip. The MVP has a new core called Neutron NXT which is derived from the Wrecker core of yester-year. The NXT version has a rg of 2.55 and a diff of 0.040, in 15lbs. The hybrid cover called VTC-H19 on the MVP comes factory polished to 1500 and is orange pearl with blue solid. To be completely honest, I wasn’t originally going to drill an MVP. I didn’t have the greatest success with two of the three Wrecker balls (I did like the pearl version called Wreck-Em). Once I saw that there was going to be a pearl MVP coming out, I thought I would go ahead and drill the MVP that was sitting on my shelf for a couple of months. I used the same layout I have on a Hy-Road, 4.5” pin with a 2” pin buffer. I’m really glad I decided to go ahead and drill the MVP. The MVP reminds me of the Storm Rocket. The shape it makes on the lane, as well as the color combination brings me back a few years. The Rocket was a favorite of mine, and a ball that I could use on a multitude of pattern shapes ranging in the upper medium-light to medium heavy volumed conditions, which is really where most patterns that are used fall in between. The MVP is a versatile ball. I have put some surface on it with a 2000 abralon pad to get it to roll earlier for the medium-heavy side; while being in the factory finish, it is more suited for medium conditions, and with a coat of Storm xtra-shine, can be used on those medium-light volume patterns. The MVP has a controllable shape going through the lane. It gets through the fronts easily, and has a readable move downlane. It isn’t a hockey stick type shape, but isn’t real archy like a banana either. The MVP has a good compliment of change of direction and control, that falls in between those two very different hook shapes. I’m really glad I decided to finally drill an MVP. My only disappointment is that I waited so long to drill it. If you are looking for a great medium condition ball that has versatility ,then the MVP is a reasonably priced ball that will fit that bill. Thank you for taking the time to read my review of the Roto Grip MVP. OWN IT!

MVP Review by Kyle & Joel Johnson
Ball Specs: 1500 Polished VTC-P19™ Hybrid Reactive Weight Block Neutron NXT™ Core (Symmetrical) What a home run RG hit here… the bang for your buck on this one is incredible, maybe the best “value ball” ever. The thing that works so well here is virtually anyone can throw it. We have had people in our shop purchasing this as their first ball and seeing their game drastically improve in a short amount of time as well as seasoned veterans adding this to their arsenal who see a completely different look from what they have in their bag. Many are comparing this ball to the Wrecker. We see a lot more people adding this to their bag then any other ball in the HP2 line in quite some time. If you need a ball late in a set or for very dry conditions but do not want to give up any carry by stepping down to a “lower end” core then this is definitely the perfect fit. MVP - packs a punch
Continuing in the legacy of ridiculous performance-to-price ratios in the HP2 line, the MVP doesn't disappoint. A brand-new cover (VTC-P19 at 1500/polish) wrapped around a familiar core (Neutron NXT at 2.55/0.040, a modified version of the Wrecker core) combine to produce a strong, nasty, chuggy shiny ball that can absolutely slay lower-volume house shots. It's got a big directional change downlane, but it never feels too whippy. It can create a ton of angle through the pins, but also has a very heavy forward-rolling downlane motion that could fool you into thinking it might actually have an asymmetric core. These combine to make it a bit of an enigma in terms of ball motion... but if that's what it is, this is one of the most fun-to-throw enigmas I've ever seen. It defies categorization, but works in a ton of different situations and is a blast to throw. Another home-run from Roto Grip - go out and get yours today!

RG MVP review by Brian Watson
The Roto Grip MVP new ball in the HP2 line. The new MVP reminds me a lot of the RG Wrecker just with an updated coverstock. Its kinda of a medium ball reaction for me. Not as strong as the bigger balls in the line like the Halo series. But definetly stronger than the hustle line. The MVP has the true RG motion, forward roll with control. I drilled mine down with a 5 inch pin no hole. The strong point for me with the MVP is control and it keeps your line. Doesn't overact or bounce when it hits dry or hydroplane in the puddle. Very good addition to the RG line. Brian Watson PAP - 5 up 1 1/8 Speed - 16 Tilt - 16 RPM - 400

I just LOVE IT!!!
ROTO GRIP MVP - 45 x 3 1/2 x 55 Cover: VTC-H19 Hybrid Core: Neutron NXT Factory Finish: 1500 grit and polished Flare: 4" plus Test condition: Mo Pinel designed house pattern - HPL panels - Flex Machine Comparing to the Hustle HSB that has a hybrid cover, the MVP motion was similar to about 40-42 feet, then that is where the core and cover took over, went a little longer to the breakpoint and responded better in the backend more so then HSB and over hybrids we have had in the HP1 and HP2 line up. Better overall performance and scoring then the HSB Hustle and similar balls from the past. Updating the Neutron Core from the Wrecker series was an excellent add to the HP2 line and will be a great benchmark ball for any level of bowler.
