Selecting the Proper Ball Weight

Adults:
The weight of the ball should be roughly ten percent of your body weight. Another good rule to go by is to choose a ball that is one to two pounds heavier than the house ball you are bowling with. The reason being is that the grip on the house ball is incorrect and a custom fit ball will feel much lighter because it will be easier to hold on to.

Kids: We recommend a weight equal to their age. Please note 6 & 8 lb bowling balls are designed for kids only not adults. Some manuacturers will not warranty 6 & 8 lb balls that are drilled for adults.

What is the Pin Placement of a bowling ball?

The pin placement of a bowling ball is the distance between the center of the core and the CG. How far the pin is from the CG will help to dictate the balls reaction on the lane.

The shorter pins like (0 - 2") will roll up earlier on the lane, and will have a smoother arcing motion to the pocket.

The longer pins like (4"+) will go much farther down the lane before starting to hook toward the pocket. The longer pins will also have a more dramatic motion toward the pins (possibly like a hockey stick shape or a skid/flip type of reaction).

The (2 - 4") pins are the most versatile to lay out for your ball driller allowing them to manipulate the ball path and have it roll up earlier or later depending on how they lay the ball out.

Why is this important?
You want to have the bowling balls natural intended reaction to match up with your drilling pattern you select for the bowling ball. If you get a short pin but want the ball to go long the ball will want to roll up early, even if you drill the ball to go long. This will cause you to have to loft the ball or push through it harder to try to get the desired ball reaction. If you would have selected the correct pin distance and applied a complementary drilling to the ball, you can throw the ball with much less effort, and let the ball do the work for you. This allows you to relax and be smooth, improving your release and scores.

What is the Top Weight of a bowling ball?

Top weight is the amount of weight difference from the top of the bowling ball (CG) and the bottom of the ball (opposite the cg).

In general their will always be more weight to the top of the ball (CG). This is due to the fact that when you drill finger holes into the ball you are extracting weight from the ball (generally 2 ounces or more depending the hole sizes and the density of the core) and it was initially designed to keep the ball balanced after it was drilled.

Balls with lower initial top weight were generally more stable after drilled than those with higher top weights due to the fact that their was so much weight left over after drilling. This created imbalance and often time added length and backend reaction for early three piece (Pancake weight block) bowling balls.

Top weight by today's standards is not nearly as important because a majority of the weight mass of most bowling balls is closer to the center of the ball than the shell and top weight has less of an effect because ball motion is more about the placement of the weight block itself and not the static weight mass. Top weight these days usually dictates hole size for those off label drillings.

What does this mean in selecting the correct top weight?

2.5 or less - Is for standard drilling techniques. It is also used for advanced drillings where moving the cg further off center of span creates a stronger drilling. You may not needing a weight hole with this type of drilling but depending on how far the cg is moved you may need a weight hole.

2.5 to 3.5 - Is great for normal layouts, a weight hole is not typical for this top weight. Stronger drillings may require a weight hole.

3.5 or more - This top weight is good if you want the ball to push more (go farther down the lane) while adding backend motion, but only if the ball driller knows and incorporates this into the drilling.

It can also be used for placing a big weight hole in a ball because it adds static weight to the drilling. This means you can use a stronger drilling than normal but make it legal by adding a weight hole to remove excess top weight (you can only have 1 oz of top weight remaining after drilling).

***NOTE: These are just basic descriptions to what top weight can do. There are many more scenarios for each top weight and what is capable with each different top weight range. Please discuss with your ball driller how they plan to drill you ball to get a better idea if they plan to use a weight hole or not to achieve the ball reaction you desire. There is no way to guarantee a ball will not need a weight hole depending on the top weight selected, the ball layout will determine that.

Shoe Size Charts

900 Global, Brunswick, Dexter and Storm bowling shoes run true to size.

Right Handed Shoes: Made for bowlers that bowl with their right hand because the slide pad is on the left shoe, which is the foot you slide with.

Left Handed Shoes: Made for bowlers that bowl with their left hand because the slide pad is on the right shoe, which is the foot you slide with.

Uni-sole Shoes: These shoes can be used for right or left handed bowlers because the slide pads are on both feet.

Don't know your shoe size? Do the following...

To get the best fit and comfort, we suggest measuring your feet each time you purchase a new pair of shoes because your feet will change during your lifetime.

1. Get a blank piece of paper, a pencil and a ruler or tape measure.
2. Put on the pair of socks you intend to wear with the shoes you are ordering. Through the course of the day, your feet will swell so it's best to measure them at the end of the day.
3. With the paper placed on a hard floor, sit down in a chair and place your foot flat on the paper. Lean forward, putting more weight onto the foot you are going to measure. As you probably know, your feet are different sizes so be sure to measure your larger foot.
4. Holding a pencil vertically, place a mark at the end of your heel. Place another mark at the tip of your longest toe.
5. With the ruler or tape measure, measure from the heel to the tip of your longest toe.

To Find Your Width:

Measure the distance between the two widest points on your foot. Reduce this number by 5 mm, or 1/5-inch. The result is the number you will use to determine your foot width.

To find your size, use the inch-to-size table. For example, if you are a man and your foot measures 10" long, you will wear a U.S. size 8 shoe. If you are between measurements, size up to the next larger size. It is easy to add a pair of socks to take up a little extra room but very difficult to make shoes that are too small comfortable.

Note: Just because you are a size 9 in one brand doesn't necessarily mean you are going to be a 9 in another. Footwear sizes and shapes vary from brand to brand. Please keep this in mind.

Description

Storm Hy-Road Nano Bowling Ball

This year marks the tenth year the Hy-Road entered the fray with some grand stories to tell. This franchise is the baseline weapon providing easy access to both power and reaction, ideal for the modern game. The unique manufacturing process that’s applied at the beginning of every Hy-Road X’s life is often imitated, but never duplicated. Look inside and you’ll see a player-preferred shape that inspires confidence. Join us in celebrating the most beloved ball in Storm’s - and perhaps the world’s - history with the Hy-Road X.

To strike, there must be friction - Slightly more aggressive than the famed R2S coverstock material, the R2X is right in the middle of Storm’s reactivity chart. It is the perfect balance of porosity and durably. It doesn’t grab too early, but doesn’t go too long either. Its versatility can benefit numerous bowlers of various styles.

Inverted Fe2 technology boasts a higher RG and differential like most other balls in the Thunder Line, but with one very important benefit: it lacks the core material that most other balls have. This enables the ball to have a much thicker shell which raises the coefficient of restitution. A higher energy transfer to the pins with less deflection upon impact is what can be expected with this design.

HyRoad X Review
Storm wanted to celebrate the HyRoad’s 10th year in the Thunder Line… So they released the HyRoad X! The HyRoad X has the R2X solid reaction coverstock with the Inverted Fe2 Technology core. However, the difference is that the weight block lacks core material and has a thicker shell. That means more power through the pins and less deflection. What I noticed while throwing the HyRoad X was how smooth and predictable it was. The layout is nothing fancy just Pin and CG kicked 1 ½ from midline. Roughly 60 X 4.5 X 40 for Dual Angle people and 4.5 X 4.5 X 2 for storm coordinates. These are based off my Axis Point which 5 5/8 over and ¾ up with a 300 Rev Rate and medium ball speed. The HyRoad X is the first HyRoad that I feel comfortable throwing. The Original HyRoad would give me good length but I had no idea where or when it was going to hook. The HyRoad X is extremely predictable at the breakpoint and is still aggressive enough to throw some pins. I did not have an opportunity to throw the HyRoad X on anything tough just House Patterns. The HyRoad X made the Great Wall of China look blended there was no over under even with the factory polish. To test a theory, I took the shine off with a 2000 pad and it still generated generous length with a more distinct break point. The first time I can say this about a bowling ball in the Thunder Line… The HyRoad X is going to be a mainstay in my league and tournament bags. I will not leave home without it!

Storm Hy-Road X by Luke Rosdahl
The Hyroad X uses the classic inverted Fe2 core from the original Hyroad, with a polished R2X solid cover. The result is a ball that feels like a stronger Hyroad Pearl across the board to me, and a great compliment to the original. The original feels a little sharper to me, and is a little straighter on the backend, where the X is still quick, but blends the back end of the lane a bit more, and is a rounder shape. The original for me is best from straighter angles, while this one is good from anywhere on the lane I want to use it. It’s great on the fresh going straight, but also very good in garbage time when the track gets beat up and you need to get inside. Due to the polish and super high RG, it gets down the lane easier than most balls on the market, but the medium-high differential helps it gain traction down the lane, and remember that despite being polished, it’s still a solid cover and also responds well to surface changes.

HyRoad X Review
HyRoad X is the latest and greatest addition to HyRoad family. I was very excited when I heard about this release from Storm Bowling. When I finally got it in my hand I was not disappointed. The HyRoad X with it’s polished R2X solid cover gets down the lane super clean followed by a smooth arching motion down lane. It definitely has more length than the Original Hyroad. I actually liken it more to the HyRoad Pearl due to how easy it gets down the lane. Think of it as having the length of the HyRoad Pearl but with a more smooth and less angular motion down lane. Storm HYROAD X
The HYROAD X has lived up to its hype. As with all the Hyroads, this ball is very predictable with its reaction, yet this one adds a little more punch. With the RG being 2.57, this ball for me gets down lane a bit more than I thought it would for a solid coverstock. But when it makes its move left it doesn't disappoint. I have drilled 2 of these balls with the following layouts. 4 1/4" x 45 and 3 1/2" x 35. The 4 1/4" ball I left the stock polished finish, and the 3 1/2" I have brought down to 2000 grit. With the 3 1/2" layout and the coverstock at 2000, this gets the ball to start up earlier to create a smoother move to the pocket in oil. My specs are 6 1/8 x 1" up, 300 rpm with 75 deg axis angle and 10 deg of tilt. I have used on multiple patterns and this is a great bench mark ball to help with getting a read on the lanes for your first couple shots, and then go up or down in strength of ball from there. This ball along with all the Hyroads is a must have in the bag.

Weight: 14 lbs. Pin Length: 3-1/2-4” Drilling: 45 x 3-1/2 x 25 Pattern Length: 40 ft. Pattern Volume: Medium Pattern Type: THS Right Handed The HyRoad X has the symmetrical, proven, Inverted Fe2 weight block from theHyRoad series, wrapped in the R2X Solid reactive cover stock, similar to the CodeX. The box finish is 1500 grit, polished. It is a Solid Midnight Black color with a 5-6” flare potential. The 14 lb. has an RG of 2.58, and a differential of 0.037. I have used the HyRoadX on a 40 ft., and a 39 ft.house pattern, each on a different lane surface. I’ve also used it at different houses in State tournaments. I used the HyRoadX at box finish and haven’t needed to try any surface changes to date. This ball gets through the heads and mid lane and makes a super strong turn coming off the pattern. It is very angular on the back ends and continues right through the pin deck. This ball is more aggressive down lane than I expected it to be, and hits much harder than I expected. Being a lower rev player, I’ve been able to use the HyRoadX on a variety of conditions in different houses. For a first game ball, I have used speed control to help my carry, and just get firmer with it as the lanes break down. It’s a perfect mid range ball for any arsenal. For the price point, you are getting A LOT of ball. You will see very angular motions from the HyRoadX coming off the oil pattern. This is in my bag, right beside the Halo and Idol, wherever I’m headed. Carol Teel Roto Grip Amateur Staff Member
