Selecting the Proper Ball Weight

Adults:
The weight of the ball should be roughly ten percent of your body weight. Another good rule to go by is to choose a ball that is one to two pounds heavier than the house ball you are bowling with. The reason being is that the grip on the house ball is incorrect and a custom fit ball will feel much lighter because it will be easier to hold on to.

Kids: We recommend a weight equal to their age. Please note 6 & 8 lb bowling balls are designed for kids only not adults. Some manuacturers will not warranty 6 & 8 lb balls that are drilled for adults.

What is the Pin Placement of a bowling ball?

The pin placement of a bowling ball is the distance between the center of the core and the CG. How far the pin is from the CG will help to dictate the balls reaction on the lane.

The shorter pins like (0 - 2") will roll up earlier on the lane, and will have a smoother arcing motion to the pocket.

The longer pins like (4"+) will go much farther down the lane before starting to hook toward the pocket. The longer pins will also have a more dramatic motion toward the pins (possibly like a hockey stick shape or a skid/flip type of reaction).

The (2 - 4") pins are the most versatile to lay out for your ball driller allowing them to manipulate the ball path and have it roll up earlier or later depending on how they lay the ball out.

Why is this important?
You want to have the bowling balls natural intended reaction to match up with your drilling pattern you select for the bowling ball. If you get a short pin but want the ball to go long the ball will want to roll up early, even if you drill the ball to go long. This will cause you to have to loft the ball or push through it harder to try to get the desired ball reaction. If you would have selected the correct pin distance and applied a complementary drilling to the ball, you can throw the ball with much less effort, and let the ball do the work for you. This allows you to relax and be smooth, improving your release and scores.

What is the Top Weight of a bowling ball?

Top weight is the amount of weight difference from the top of the bowling ball (CG) and the bottom of the ball (opposite the cg).

In general their will always be more weight to the top of the ball (CG). This is due to the fact that when you drill finger holes into the ball you are extracting weight from the ball (generally 2 ounces or more depending the hole sizes and the density of the core) and it was initially designed to keep the ball balanced after it was drilled.

Balls with lower initial top weight were generally more stable after drilled than those with higher top weights due to the fact that their was so much weight left over after drilling. This created imbalance and often time added length and backend reaction for early three piece (Pancake weight block) bowling balls.

Top weight by today's standards is not nearly as important because a majority of the weight mass of most bowling balls is closer to the center of the ball than the shell and top weight has less of an effect because ball motion is more about the placement of the weight block itself and not the static weight mass. Top weight these days usually dictates hole size for those off label drillings.

What does this mean in selecting the correct top weight?

2.5 or less - Is for standard drilling techniques. It is also used for advanced drillings where moving the cg further off center of span creates a stronger drilling. You may not needing a weight hole with this type of drilling but depending on how far the cg is moved you may need a weight hole.

2.5 to 3.5 - Is great for normal layouts, a weight hole is not typical for this top weight. Stronger drillings may require a weight hole.

3.5 or more - This top weight is good if you want the ball to push more (go farther down the lane) while adding backend motion, but only if the ball driller knows and incorporates this into the drilling.

It can also be used for placing a big weight hole in a ball because it adds static weight to the drilling. This means you can use a stronger drilling than normal but make it legal by adding a weight hole to remove excess top weight (you can only have 1 oz of top weight remaining after drilling).

***NOTE: These are just basic descriptions to what top weight can do. There are many more scenarios for each top weight and what is capable with each different top weight range. Please discuss with your ball driller how they plan to drill you ball to get a better idea if they plan to use a weight hole or not to achieve the ball reaction you desire. There is no way to guarantee a ball will not need a weight hole depending on the top weight selected, the ball layout will determine that.

Shoe Size Charts

900 Global, Brunswick, Dexter and Storm bowling shoes run true to size.

Right Handed Shoes: Made for bowlers that bowl with their right hand because the slide pad is on the left shoe, which is the foot you slide with.

Left Handed Shoes: Made for bowlers that bowl with their left hand because the slide pad is on the right shoe, which is the foot you slide with.

Uni-sole Shoes: These shoes can be used for right or left handed bowlers because the slide pads are on both feet.

Don't know your shoe size? Do the following...

To get the best fit and comfort, we suggest measuring your feet each time you purchase a new pair of shoes because your feet will change during your lifetime.

1. Get a blank piece of paper, a pencil and a ruler or tape measure.
2. Put on the pair of socks you intend to wear with the shoes you are ordering. Through the course of the day, your feet will swell so it's best to measure them at the end of the day.
3. With the paper placed on a hard floor, sit down in a chair and place your foot flat on the paper. Lean forward, putting more weight onto the foot you are going to measure. As you probably know, your feet are different sizes so be sure to measure your larger foot.
4. Holding a pencil vertically, place a mark at the end of your heel. Place another mark at the tip of your longest toe.
5. With the ruler or tape measure, measure from the heel to the tip of your longest toe.

To Find Your Width:

Measure the distance between the two widest points on your foot. Reduce this number by 5 mm, or 1/5-inch. The result is the number you will use to determine your foot width.

To find your size, use the inch-to-size table. For example, if you are a man and your foot measures 10" long, you will wear a U.S. size 8 shoe. If you are between measurements, size up to the next larger size. It is easy to add a pair of socks to take up a little extra room but very difficult to make shoes that are too small comfortable.

Note: Just because you are a size 9 in one brand doesn't necessarily mean you are going to be a 9 in another. Footwear sizes and shapes vary from brand to brand. Please keep this in mind.

Description

Storm Hy-Road Nano Bowling Ball

This year marks the tenth year the Hy-Road entered the fray with some grand stories to tell. This franchise is the baseline weapon providing easy access to both power and reaction, ideal for the modern game. The unique manufacturing process that’s applied at the beginning of every Hy-Road X’s life is often imitated, but never duplicated. Look inside and you’ll see a player-preferred shape that inspires confidence. Join us in celebrating the most beloved ball in Storm’s - and perhaps the world’s - history with the Hy-Road X.

To strike, there must be friction - Slightly more aggressive than the famed R2S coverstock material, the R2X is right in the middle of Storm’s reactivity chart. It is the perfect balance of porosity and durably. It doesn’t grab too early, but doesn’t go too long either. Its versatility can benefit numerous bowlers of various styles.

Inverted Fe2 technology boasts a higher RG and differential like most other balls in the Thunder Line, but with one very important benefit: it lacks the core material that most other balls have. This enables the ball to have a much thicker shell which raises the coefficient of restitution. A higher energy transfer to the pins with less deflection upon impact is what can be expected with this design.

Hyroad X review by Tommy Gollick
The Hyroad X is the latest edition of bowling balls in the Thunder line of balls from Storm. Hyroad X uses the R2X solid cover, which is the first time we have seen this cover/core combination in the US. The Hyroad X is solid black with gold labels, and celebrates the 10th consecutive year that there has been a Hyroad in the Storm catalog, an unparalleled feat in today’s bowling industry. The 15lb Hyroad X has an Rg of 2.57 and diff. of 0.046. Anyone who knows me, knows that I haven’t had the great success with the Hyroad or Hyroad solid, compared to the rest of bowling mankind. The original Hyroad was very condition specific for me. I do like the Hyroad pearl, however. With all that said, I REALLY like the Hyroad X! It doesn’t bog down as fast as the Hyroad Nano or Hyroad solid, and I don’t see the drastic over/under like I had with the original Hyroad. I drilled the Hyroad X with a 4 x 2 (pin/buffer). Utilizing the availability of the new no balance hole rule, the virtual MB number is now rendered unnecessary when laying out the ball (extreme amounts of top weight or extreme cg placement do need to be weighed to stay under 3oz., though). The X reads the backend of the pattern very well with continuation through the pocket and off the pin deck, with virtually no early hook. The 2” pin buffer seems to be the ticket for me, when dealing with this weight block shape. I like using the Hyroad X when I want to open up a pattern and wheel on it, especially on medium volume house patterns, and USBC white pattern #1 and #3. I usually change surfaces around for testing, but I have decided to not adjust the surface on the Hyroad X, as I really like the way this ball shapes. I’m very pleased with the fact that I finally have a “Hyroad look” on the lanes, and am able to use this core shape for more than just burn, which is when I use the Pearl Hyroad. Thank you for taking the time to read my review of the Hyroad X. Bowl up a Storm!

Hy-road x
The Hy-road x is the ball in the Storm Bowling arsenal that every bowler will need when tournament time comes around. Core that has been a proven winner for a long time. What I wanted this ball to do is get the length but to be continue through the pins. Well this ball did just that for me and more. Highly recommended for your bad! approved by our pro shop customers

Hyroad X
The first ball I drilled up since leaving another company was the Hyroad X by Storm Bowling. When I was looking for a ball I was looking for something that had some versatility and something that could be a benchmark ball for me. So after having a discussion with RSM Steve Todd I decided to drill this ball up first and after I threw it I was like WOW…Drilled this ball with my favorite layout pin under the bridge with the cg kicked a little. When I threw it the ball was a motion I haven’t had in a long time where it read the mid lane so well and flipped on the back that I was in amazed. I threw this for awhile and used it at the PBA Central Over/Under Doubles and this was the right ball on the 40 foot pattern for the beginning 4 games that I was feeling really comfortable until later in the block where it was slowing up and I had to switch balls. So if you are looking for that all around ball with the proven Hyroad core and an all new overstock than this is the ball for you

Hy-Road X Review by Staffer Chris Martinez
Bowlers Info: RH tweener, PAP 4-1/2 x 7/8 up, 365 RPM, 17* of Axis tilt, 60* of Axis Rotation Ball Layout: 35 x 3-3/8 x 40 Finish: OOB with light 4000 by hand When the Hyroad X was announced for release, I was going to pass on it as for some reason my game and the Hyroad series just didn't match up. But then I worked a Storm MatchMaker event and really liked what I saw, especially how it matched up to a variety of different bowling styles. I punched one up with a 3-3/8" pin so the pin was just to the right of my ring finger and left it OOB. Went to throw it and noticed how super clean it was...almost too clean. Decide to hit it with 4000 abralon by hand and that did the trick! I have played anywhere from up the boards to deep inside angles and the ball just hit hard and carries with predictability! When the lanes get really burnt, I have confidence I can move deep left and this ball will clear those burnt fronts and recover with enough energy to kick out the 10pin.

Storm HyroadX
The Hyroad X is a celebration of the OG Hyroad and In the current, “drop a ball every month” type market, it’s amazing that the hyroad has hung in for this long. It says a lot about how good people think this ball is…The X uses the Inverted FE2 block with no outer core material, this increases the restitution which makes the ball deflect less when it hits the pocket. Storm wrapped it up with the R2X solid cover finished with 1500 grit and some polish. The shelf appeal is great…a solid color and some gold in the logo keep the look clean, simple and classic. After having this ball for two months and having used it during league and the filming of my video review. I can say that the X, for me at least, does not like oil…at all. I understand that price point and design intent will govern the final ball reaction. So, for my less rev and tilt style, I had to get it right, sometimes uncomfortably right…it was a leap of faith sending the X to the five board but, I was rewarded for my risks. The X is a boomerang coming off the pattern. I drilled a bunch of Hyroad X’s for other customers and had the same conversation with them all….you need to get it right…once they listened, they saw what this ball is capable of. So, I suppose that is the upside and now for the downside. It was near impossible for me to use the X right out of the gate during my weekly league. This ball was a better late option for me, rather than a first choice. With that in mind, I’ve seen a bunch of stronger players successfully use it during the first game and on more volume. I don’t bowl on sport conditions often, especially during the winter, but I can see the Hyroad X working pretty well on moderate length sport patterns. Overall the Hyroad X is near the MatchUp Hybrid for me as far as strength is concerned. Which makes sense due to the closeness of the cost, about 25 dollars different between the two depending where look. I think it would have been fun to see the original hybrid cover on the X, kind of a relaunch or reboot of the classic but, since the classic Hyroad is still being made, I suppose that would’ve been a waste. I see where it fits in with the other Hyroad releases and it’s reasonable to think you could have a spot for each in your bag. In closing…The Hyroad X is a slick looking release, it loves to bounce off the dry boards and if you get on it pretty good or you’re a bit slower with your speed you will put a lot of X’s on the monitor.
